Srimad Bhagavatam, Fourth Canto, Chant, Twenty-three, take 7.

Titikṣu yatavāgdhānta, urdhva-retā-jitā-nila, avirādhā, yuṣu, kṛṣṇa, acarit-tapa-uttama, titikṣu, tolerating, yatha, controlling, vath, words, dhantah, controlling the senses, urdhva-retah, without discharge of famine.

Am, Lord Krishna, accharat, practice, tapa, austerities, uttamam, the best.

Translation in purport by his divine grace.

Om Vishnu-pad-pada-maham-sapadi-vajak-charan-jah-stheta-rasa-darshi-shemad-esi-vakti-vadhamsa-tri-dandi-goswami Maharaja Prabhupada ki jaya.

Maharaja Prithu, under all these severe austerities, in order to control his mind, his words, and his senses to refrain from discharging his semen and to control the life air within his body.

All this he did for the satisfaction of Krishna, he had no other purpose.

In Kali-yuga the following is recommended.

In order to be recognized by Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, 1 should chant the holy name of the Lord continuously, 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately, persons who cannot accept this formula prefer to execute some type of pseudo-meditation without accepting the other processes of austerity.

The fact is, however, that 1 must accept either the severe method of austerity described above, become purified, or take to the process of devotional service recommended for pleasing the Supreme Lord, Krishna.

The person who is Krishna conscious is most intelligent because in Kali-yuga it is not at all possible to undergo such severe austerities.

We need only follow great personalities like Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In his Siksastaka, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu wrote, param vijayate si krsna-sankirtanam, all glory to the holy names of Lord Krishna, which from their very beginning purify the heart and immediately liberate 1.

Bhava-mahad-dhvajnim nirvapanam If the real purpose of all yoga is to please Lord Krishna and this simple bhakti yoga system recommended for this age is sufficient.

It is necessary, however, to engage constantly in the service of the Lord.

Although Prithvi Maharaj executed this austerity long before the appearance of Lord Krishna on this planet, his purpose was still to please Krishna.

There are many fools who claim that worship of Krishna began only about 5000 years ago after the appearance of Lord Krishna in India.

You can go back in the verse, it says Krishna, the word Krishna is in the verse, so that confirms it.

Prithu Maharaj worshipped Krishna millions of years ago.

Unless his total lifespan was 100,000 years, how could Dhruva Maharaj reign over the world for 36,000 years?

The point is that Krishna worship existed at the beginning of creation and is continuing to exist in Sātya Yuga, Shreya Yuga and Dvarapa Yuga and now is continuing in Kali Yuga.

As stated in Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna appears not only in this millennium in Brahma's life, but in every millennium.

Therefore worship of Krishna is conducted in all millenniums.

It is not that Krishna worship began only when Krishna appeared on this planet 5000 years ago.

This is a foolish conclusion and is not substantiated by Vedic literature.

Also significant in this verse are the words, ariradha vishukrshnam acyutam uttamam.

Maharaja Pradyumna has been severe type of austerity for the purpose, the express purpose of worshipping Krishna.

Krishna is so kind especially in this age that He appears in the transcendental vibration of His holy name as stated in the Nārada-pancarātra, ādhī-adhī-adhī-adhī-adhī-tapasāt-tathā-akhyam.

If Kṛṣṇa is worshipped, if he is the goal of advancement, there is no need for 1 to execute severe types of sapasra because 1 has already reached his destination.

If after executing all types of sapasra 1 cannot reach Krishna.

Without Krishna, all austerity is simply wasted labor.

We should therefore not be discouraged just because we cannot go to the forest and practice severe austerities.

Our life is so short that we must strictly adhere to the principles laid down by the Vaishnava Acharyas and peacefully execute Krishna consciousness.

There is no need to become dependent, despondent.

Maharaj, whether Narottam Das Tukar recommends, Maharaja, Narada dasa Thakura recommends, arhande bala hari bhaja vrndavana, she guru vaisnava pade bhajiya mana.

For a chance and endless blissful life, chant Hare Krishna mantra, come worship to the holy place of Vrndavana and always engage in the service of the Lord, the spiritual master and the Vaishnava.

This Krishna consciousness movement is therefore very safe and easy.

We have only to execute the order of Krishna and fully surrender unto him.

We have only to execute the order of the spiritual master, preach Krishna consciousness, and follow it in the path of the Vaishnava.

The spiritual master represents both Krishna and the Vaishnava.

Therefore, by following the instructions of the spiritual master by chanting Hare Krishna, everything will be all right.

Amala, Sri Guru and Vaisnavamsa, Sri Rupam, Sagaraja, Sa, Agna, Radha, Nithyam, Nithyam, Svajivam, Sadaityam, Sava, Dutam, Parijana, Sahitam, Krishna, Chaitanya, Devam, Sri Radha, Krishna, Padam, Sa, Agna, Radha, Nithya, Sri Visakhanti, Tam, Sa.

So, when Srila Baba says everything will be alright, what does that mean?

It means everything is not alright right now.

As a result of our sinful activities, as a result of our godlessness.

It's all based on money, money, money, money, money.

They say money, money, money, sweeter than honey.

They don't know what actual sweetness is.

But even as a saying, money cannot buy you happiness.

But still they think, even though it's stated, money cannot buy you happiness, they think money can buy you happiness.

Because the so-called material sense gratification, with money you can buy sense gratification.

The more you have money, the more you can gratify your senses.

So the whole culture is based on sense gratification.

Sense gratification is all different types of lust.

Wanting to enjoy seventh day of Krishna is simply lust.

So we have to give up this tendency to want to enjoy separate from Krishna.

Even related with Krishna we see devotees sometimes, they want to enjoy their senses in relation with Krishna also.

It's like someone told me they wanted to have Krishna as their husband.

But that means they want Krishna to gratify their sins.

When they're in the mood of actually satisfying Krishna, I'll serve him anyway.

So we have to become sober and realize as long as even in a subtle way we try to identify our senses we're committing suicide spiritual suicide so we have to become very chaste and very sober and our only desire is that my every thought my every word and every deed will be satisfying to Krishna.

We are very indispective, we have to all be very vigilant because Maya is always trying to sneak in and divert us from Krishna consciousness.

She's always trying to get in there and get us away from the pure bhakti path that we've taken up by the mercy of his divine grace.

So in austerity Prabhupada didn't start this movement.

Can you imagine 2 heart attacks on the road?

Prabhupada didn't think he would be successful.

He arrived in Boston at Commonwealth Port.

He was thinking, as soon as I tell him, no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling, I'll immediately say, please go home.

The reason he thought this is God's brother was preaching to Lord Jutland in England.

Lord Jutland had previously been the governor of Bengal during the British rule and Prabhupada even remembered, he was actually a Scotsman and Prabhupada was a student at Scottish Church's college.

He remembered this, George Dutton came and gave a talk at the college, he remembered Lord Gedlin.

Prabhupada was sitting near the front and he remembered this nice gentleman, Lord Gentleman.

So anyway, Brahma's gobbler went there and he said, Swamiji, can you make me a Brahmin?

He said yes, no problem, I can make you a Brahmin, but no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling, Lord Yadav said impossible.

But, but Prabhupada thought let me try, let me try.

It is also said impossible is a word in a fool's dictionary.

So do you want to be a fool by saying it's impossible?

If we say impossible, we categorize ourselves as fools.

Oh, it's impossible to become Krishna's spirit of devotee.

It's impossible to spread Krishna consciousness.

If you want to embrace the word impossible, that's your business.

You keep relegating yourself to the position of fool number 1.

Therefore by Krishna's grace anything is possible everything is possible so we should beg for Krishna's mercy.

I'm drowning in ocean of lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion, envy.

It seems to be a hopeless basket case but please save me my dear mother Radharani my dear father Krishna please save me please save me please save me Let me become fixed in devotional service.

Let me become chaste and sober in my thoughts, my words, and my actions.

No, I'm chained away with the modes of nature.

Right now we're all tied up in the modes.

So we're tied very tightly in sadhva guna, vajra guna, tamo guna.

We act in so many ways that are wrong it's all due to the influence of these modes so we have to get out of these influences these modes of nature by taking shelter of Lord Sri Krishna.

So it's not difficult we simply have to apply the process.

The wonderful process that Prabhupada has given us, we have to strictly follow this pathway.

If we follow Prabhupada's instructions, our lives will be successful, there's no doubt.

If we deviate from Prabhupada's instructions, who needs a guru anyway?

I'm pretty intelligent, I know a lot of verses.

For such persons, the Bhagavad-Gita is bogus, simply bogus.

We have to submit ourselves to the bona fide spiritual master, otherwise we're committing spiritual suicide, killing ourselves, taking a knife, cutting your own throat.

So let us not be fools and mascots, let us take this process seriously.

Mahajanaya yena katastra-pantabha, this pathway has been chalked out by these great mahajanas, our previous acharyas.

Brahma is there, Narada Muni is there, Srila Vyasa Dev is there, Madhvacarya is there, we have a whole line of the succession of great enlightened empowered personalities and it's not that they're dead and gone.

There's 2 presences of the spiritual master.

The Vapu, that will be gone sooner or later.

I'm talking about the physical body everybody in 70 to death all days of these and death so the body will be gone but but but Bonnie Bonnie that's a real presence you can act with a Bonnie that Bonnie you can always be packed up tightly with the spiritual master and the previous acharya.

You stick to the Vani of the spiritual master, the teachings of the spiritual master.

You take the instructions of the spiritual master and embrace them within your heart.

I take these instructions in my very life and soul and my spiritual master has taught me, let me embrace it in my very life and soul.

And this way you become never separated, but always self, the presence of his spiritual master.

He always felt that my Guru Maharaj is with me, blessing me and guiding me.

Because he embraced the order of his spiritual master, it seemed impossible.

He said, oh, you're educated in English, you should spread Krishna consciousness in the English speaking world.

At that time he was the manager of a chemical factory.

And because it is dedication, it is love for his spiritual master, love of the spiritual master means dedicate to the order.

Not I love the spiritual master but I don't want to serve his order.

Sometimes you see the rascals, so-called disciples, I love the spiritual master but I don't want to follow his instructions.

I don't want to submit myself, become humble before the spiritual master.

If you truly love your spiritual master, you surrender unto him.

Not that I love my spiritual master but I do my own thing.

No, you don't love your spiritual master if you do your own thing.

So 1 has to take the process very seriously.

It's like we sing the glories of the spiritual master in Gavastaka.

We sing every day so there should be some slogans on the lips.

Vishwanath Chakravarti, of course, is very kindly giving us these beautiful prayers to help us meditate on our relationship with the spiritual master so we can make our lives very very successful by embracing these principles in our hearts.

I'm not very realized in Krishna consciousness.

There's not much I can say but let's see if we can look at these words of Sita Prabhupada a little more carefully, go a little deeper, that will help me say some more words, looking at Prabhupada's words.

In the verse, aras krtu, anumit, all these are austerities, we have to control his bored intenses, refrain from discharging his samadhi, control the life ever within his body, all that he did for the satisfaction of Krishna.

I remember the yoga system austerities, the pranayama, the asanas, they are done very rigidly according to the, not so, the pseudo yoga they teach here in the yoga studios.

That system would take, it was done in the satya yuga, not the traitor, worker, or colleague.

That system was performed in the Satya yuga, but it would take 60,000 years.

They lived to be 100,000 in that age of Satya, and it took 60,000 years to see perfection by that process.

Somebody says, well, I'm going to go to the forest, I'm going to do severe penance and austerity, then I'm just going to live on the roots of trees.

Sometimes I'm not even going to drink any water.

But even if you could, it would take you 60,000 years, but that process would become perfect.

These people make a show of being a yogi, it's simply bogus.

So once you take advantage of the process of this age, called time, place and circumstance.

Whatever is suitable in a particular time, place and circumstance.

If you do something that is not suitable, you are not going to be successful.

So the actual method for the salvatization of the sage of Kali is chanting the holy names of the Lord.

So if a father says 24 hours a day, that's a pretty big assignment, to chant 24 hours a day.

I chant my 16 rounds and engage myself in devotional service, offering the RT ceremony, cooking for the Lord, cleaning for the Lord, cleaning the temple for the Lord, preaching for the Lord.

So in this way if you engage all day in devotional service you don't even dream about devotional service at night.

So in this way we have to be constantly in the Christian consciousness.

You leave Maya a little gap, she'll get in and take over.

Don't leave any space for Maya to get in.

So the whole point is you have to make your faith strong.

Anything you have doubtful about inquire.

So you have to make your faith very strong.

Reveal all your doubts in a humble way, not in a challenging way.

It's like 1 devotee is very doubtful how a devotee can break their promise.

But then you look and you see that Krishna also broke his promise.

So a Vaishnava can also break a promise sometimes for the protection of a devotee.

Krishna broke his promise to protect Arjuna.

If 1 is doubtful how a devotee can break his promise, that can be sometimes done to protect the devotee.

So if a devotee had a doubt about that, that means he's not reading the books.

He's not seeing what can be done sometimes to protect the devotee.

So there's a vow 1 should inquire, read Baba's books.

Baba's books will erase all doubts or inquire from the spiritual master or the advanced devotee.

Inquire, inquire, inquire in a humble way, not a challenging way.

Humble inquiries will erase all the doubts.

So it's very important to become doubt free.

When your doubts are free, then you can move forward and become a pure devotee of Krishna.

Paramahamsa das, Can you please elaborate on the term Sridhar Pada mentions that don't be despondent.

Encouragement is just be happy in Krishna consciousness.

You can be despondent or you can be ecstatic.

You can be jubilant or you can be miserable.

It's not an encouragement to be happy it's instruction you must be happy so how do you be happy by submitting to Krishna so don't be despondent it's instruction not encouragement.

It's an instruction, not an encouragement.

First of all, their talk is never challenging.

So that mood, that proper mood of humbly inquiring is there.

Don't worry if it's like you're an actor on the stage you have to walk in a certain way and talk in a certain way.
