# The Light of Salvation: Insights from the Book of Isaiah

## Last Week’s Reflection

Last week, we explored a powerful verse from the Book of Isaiah that encapsulates its message of salvation: **Isaiah 12:2**: "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid." This verse beautifully connects the themes of Isaiah with the salvation message found in the four gospels.

This week, we continue to reflect on the Christmas story through the lens of Isaiah, focusing on another prophecy about Jesus Christ written **734 years** before His birth. Our central theme is: **Don’t Miss the Light**—the light that laid in the manger, was nailed to a cross, resided in an empty grave, and ascended to heaven.

Instead of asking about your worries, I want to share a personal experience that kept me up at night. Recently, I faced overwhelming anxiety regarding my son David's upcoming neck surgery. The weight of potential complications, including paralysis and a rare blood disorder, felt unbearable.

### Turning to Isaiah

Let’s turn to **Isaiah chapter 8** and **Isaiah chapter 9** as we seek answers to our first question: **Why do we need the light?**

### Understanding Our Need for Light

In **Isaiah 8:19**, the prophet warns against consulting mediums and spiritists, urging people to seek God instead. He addresses two groups:
- **Godly People**: They need to remember that God still reigns.
- **Ungodly People**: They are reminded that they can turn to a Savior for salvation.

#### The Context of King Ahaz

Under King Ahaz, who engaged in detestable practices, the people turned away from God. Isaiah warns against idolatry, reminding us of the dangers of allowing anything to become more important than our relationship with God.

### Self-Reflection: What are Our Idols?

Consider the things in our lives that can become idols:
- **Identity**: Are we defining ourselves by worldly standards rather than our identity in Christ?
- **Money**: Are we allowing the love of money to distract us from our faith?
- **Family and Relationships**: Are we placing our loved ones above our relationship with God?

Isaiah describes the dire consequences of rejecting God:
- **Distress and Darkness**: People experience despair and hopelessness when they look away from God.

## Who is the Light?

Now, let’s explore **Isaiah chapter 9**, where we answer our second question: **Who is the light?**

In **Isaiah 9:1-2**, we see a promise of hope: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light." This light is a reference to the coming Messiah, who would bring salvation not just to the Jews but to all nations.

### Jesus: The Fulfillment of Prophecy

Jesus is identified as the light of the world, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy as He began His ministry in Galilee, a region previously humbled by sin. 

### The Impact of Jesus's Arrival

- **Explosion of Light**: His birth was marked by a wondrous star, and His teachings illuminated the path to God.
- **The Light of Life**: Jesus proclaimed, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness."

## What is the Light Like?

Finally, we turn to **Isaiah 9:6**, where we learn about the nature of Jesus, the light:

In our moments of struggle, we can find solace in Jesus, who carries us into God's presence. As illustrated in a poignant story shared during a morning devotional, a young boy who spent much of his life in the hospital expressed a profound understanding of God's eternal perspective: "God has got all of eternity to make it up to me." This perspective reminds us that even in trials, we can trust in God's ultimate plan.

Jesus, as the Prince of Peace, offers us three forms of peace:
1. **Peace with God**: Our sins are forgiven, bringing reconciliation.
2. **Peace in Our Hearts**: His presence guards our hearts and minds.
3. **Future Peace**: A promise of a kingdom where there will be no more pain or sorrow.

Last week I suggested that the 1 verse that summarizes best the book of Isaiah is found in Isaiah chapter 12 verse 2.

We said it together, behold, God is my salvation.

And it was no coincidence that the Book of Isaiah expresses with clarity the message of salvation that is later found in the 4 gospels.

We spoke how this was about our rebellion, And then we mentioned how God offers to cleanse us of our sin through the life of his suffering servant Messiah.

And we spoke about how God offers blessings through faith and obedience.

This was the message of salvation as spoken through the words of Isaiah.

And as we read through Isaiah chapter 7, we saw how his writings fulfilled a long-term prophecy concerning the birth of Jesus Christ.

And it was done with such precision that only God could have revealed this to Isaiah, what we called a 1 in a hundred quadrillion type of event.

Or as I tried to illustrate, a lot of loonies scattered across the country.

Our theme last week was don't miss the sign.

The sign that was found in an empty grave, and the sign that ascended to heaven.

This morning we are again going to look at the Christmas story through the eyes of Isaiah, another prophecy or 2, about Jesus Christ written 734 years before his birth.

But this time, we're going to look at it through the words penned in Isaiah chapter 6.

Our big idea this morning is don't miss the light.

Don't miss the light that laid in the manger.

Don't miss the light that was nailed to a cross.

Don't miss the light that was in an empty grave.

And don't miss the light that ascended to heaven.

And We're gonna ask ourselves 3 questions.

Now, 1 of the things that I would like to do differently this morning is the following.

Instead of asking you, as I did last week, if there is something in your life that is keeping you up late at night, or waking you up early in the morning, or preventing you from sleeping at all, I want to tell you about what kept me up at night and how God helped me get through it.

A number of weeks ago, just before Canadian Thanksgiving, I stood up during the breaking of bread over there but where Heidi or Rudy is sitting.

I stood up and I tearfully shared with everyone how the anxiety that I was experiencing in relation to David's upcoming surgery, neck surgery, was overwhelming me.

Now I didn't go through many details, but at the time I said it felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I could not breathe.

I said that at night I so desperately wanted to fall asleep in order to escape the heaviness, but my eyes would not close.

You see, David's surgery was high risk, and because it required the removal of vertebrae in his neck and the fusion of others as well, if something went wrong, Well, the thought of paralysis scared me.

Moreover, during the pre-opt, to make things worse, they found that he had a rare blood disorder, which meant that there was also a possibility that he could bleed out on the operating table and die.

That's the backstory to a difficult few months in my life this year.

Now I encourage you and your Bibles to turn with me to Isaiah chapter 8.

Isaiah chapter 8, we are going to spend some time in both Isaiah chapter 8 and Isaiah chapter 9.

And the first thing we are going to do is we're going to look at our first question.

Isaiah chapter 8 beginning at verse 19 When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God?

Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Consult God's instruction and the testimony of warning.

If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

In these verses, Isaiah is addressing 2 groups of people, godly people who need to be reminded that God still reigns and ungodly people who need to know that they can still turn to a savior From darkness to light.

And at the time of this writing, we know from 2 Kings chapter 16 that Ahaz is king.

And He's not just any king, but he's an evil king.

And scripture says that he did evil things in the sight of the Lord.

Well, he built an altar to his god, the god called Malik, which was the god of the Ammonites.

And at the base of Malik's feet, he placed a furnace where they would sacrifice children.

He even sacrificed his own son in the fire.

Now, these were detestable practices, to say the least.

Detestable practices of the pagan nations that the Lord drove out from the land of the Israelites and here under this king King Ahaz under his leadership They're offering sacrifices.

You see there was no worship at the temple.

They were worshipping demons, demons that took over these false gods.

Listen to the words of caution written by the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 10.

Therefore, my dear brothers, flee from idolatry.

Tim Keller in his book, Counterfeit Gods, wrote the following about idolatry.

He said, an idol is anything more important to you than God.

Anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God.

Anything that you seek to give you what only God can give.

Let's pause for a moment of self-reflection.

What are some things in our life that can become an idol?

Things that can become more important than God, things that absorb our heart, our imagination more than God.

In this slide, we list 10 things that can become an idol.

And for the sake of time, let me address a few of these, beginning with identity, which occurs, I quote, when we take images of contemporary culture and use them to define who we are.

For example, if someone asked you to tell them about yourself, how would you respond?

Would you mention your race, your ethnicity, your gender, your education, your works, politics, social or economic background?

These things, if we allow them, can become an idol.

Instead, our identity should be in Christ.

You know, we should be talking about how I am spiritually united with Christ.

And how he's doing great things in my life through his Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ should define who I am, who we are.

Second, When it comes to money, let me read the following excerpt.

And I'm sure you've known it, but I don't know if you've heard of the second 1.

Rockefeller, the answer was just a little bit more.

At the peak of his wealth, get this, At the peak of his wealth, get this, at the peak of his wealth, Rockefeller had a net worth of about 1% of the entire US economy.

He owned 90% of all the oil and gas industry at that time.

Compared to today's rich people, Rockefeller, he makes Bill Gates and Warren Buffett look like poppers." And yet he still wanted just a little bit more.

In 1 Timothy chapter 6 verse 10, Paul wrote, for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Notice, Paul does not say that money is the root of all evil.

Instead, he says that the love of money is the root of all evil.

Rockefeller said at a later date, I quote, the impression was gaining around me that it was a good thing to let the money, that it was a good thing to let the money be my slave and not make myself a slave to money.

And thirdly, and the last 1 that I just want to look at a little bit, is number 10 on that list, family and or children.

Now let me begin by stating that both a spouse and children are a blessing from God.

Proverbs 18 22 says a man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.

Psalm 127 verse 3 says, children are a gift from the Lord.

But when we begin to love them more than God, both our spouse and our children can become an idol.

And when our identity is in our spouse or in our children, And when they fail to meet our expectation, and they will, and us them, this is a recipe for disaster.

For myself, I had to make sure that David had not become more important to me than God.

And this is true regarding my relationship with my spelf and both Megan and William.

You see, regardless of the surgery or the outcome of the surgery, David was first and foremost a gift from God, and I had to love the giver more than the gift.

And for that reason I had to release David to God, which I did, but it was not easy.

Returning to our text in Isaiah chapter 8, we're going to read those verses over 1 more time.

Again, Isaiah is warning godly people about what the ungodly are about to say and do regarding communicating with the dead.

Verse 19, When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, remember mediums and spiritists are people who communicate with the dead, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God, why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Now if you think that this type of behavior does not exist today, a quick search on Google reveals that there are many people in the world involved in some real demonic stuff similar to what we read in this verse.

And it's definitely prominent in the province of Quebec.

And unfortunately Ouija boards are still available as Christmas presents on Amazon.

And Isaiah is warning the people and us, and in verse 20 we read, consult God's instruction, the testimony of warning.

And the consequences of such darkness or spiritual depravity is captured in verse 21.

Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land.

When they are famished, they will become enraged.

And looking up, will curse their God and King." This is a picture of utter despair, the complete loss of hope.

This is the consequence of what happens when people turn away from God.

People are distressed, they're hungry, they're famished, they're enraged, they're cursing their God and King.

And to curse God and King means to reject God.

And when you are not looking up, you're looking down.

And in verse 22 we read, Then they will look towards the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom.

Then they will be thrust into utter darkness." Notice they are not looking to the heavens.

Instead they're looking to the earth where Satan is the prince of this world.

God is out of these picture and what happens?

Paul wrote to the Corinthians, this is what Paul wrote to the Corinthians about Satan the god of this age The God of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.

For God who said, let light shine out of darkness, made his light Shine in our hearts to give us the light of a knowledge of God's glory Displayed in the face of Christ.

Because the God of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers So that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Isaiah made of the Pentecostal words over 2700 years ago, but they're still relevant today.

We may not be physically throwing children into fire as an offering, but many have tried to remove God from existence.

And our culture is filled with spiritual darkness, resulting in atheism, moral depravity, lust, sexual promiscuity, fear, anger, addiction, and emotional distress.

Next, let's turn to Isaiah chapter 9, verse 1, and address our second question.

Notice how the words light and darkness appear in the text.

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress.

In the past, he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations by the way of the sea beyond the Jordan.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

So here we begin with a contrast between light and darkness.

Isaiah says that there will be a time in the future when there will be no more gloom for those who are in distress.

There will be a time in the future when Israel will no longer be exiles.

Last week I mentioned how God ordering King Ahaz to ask him for a sign was a new revelation to me.

Here is something else that I learned this week, something that was new to me.

You see, when Isaiah writes about a time in the past when the land of Zebulun and Naphtali was humbled, He is referring to a time in history when because of their sin, God allowed the Assyrians to destroy the land.

Now this is particularly interesting because both Naphtali and Zebulon were located in the area around the Sea of Galilee.

And this verse, Isaiah writes, that the future, in the future, God will honor Galilee of the nations.

Isaiah is saying that God will someday honor a place that was once humbled and destroyed because of their sin and will experience God's mercy and salvation and be honored by him.

Isaiah in this prophecy is saying that the Messiah will come to Galilee.

Notice he didn't say Jerusalem where there was a strong Jewish population, instead he said Galilee, a place that had been wiped out and made desolate at this time because of sin.

And furthermore, Isaiah's words would not have been well received by the Jews because he said God would honor not just Galilee, but Galilee of the nations.

Isaiah was announcing to everyone that Jesus was there not only for the benefit of the Jewish people, but he was the world's savior, that he was the light of the world.

Much of Jesus's earthly ministry was spent in the region of Galilee just as Isaiah prophesied.

It's affirmed in Matthew chapter 4 verse 12.

When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.

Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the land in the area of Zebulun and Natali to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah, what we're reading this morning.

Land of Zebulun and land of Natali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people living in darkness have seen a great light on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

From that time on, Jesus began to preach, repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near.

Rob Morgan, pastor, speaker, author, had this to say about Matthew chapter 4.

I quote, This passage, the 1 on the screen, is quoted word for word as applying to Jesus when he moved into the city of Capernaum.

When Jesus came to earth, there was an explosion of light.

I can't read these words without remembering that When he came, the skies overhead were illuminated by a wondrous star.

And when he began to teach, he called himself the light of the world.

And when he rose from the dead, it was at the moment of sunrise.

And when we get to heaven, we'll find no need for a lamp or light for the lamb is its light.

Jesus brings intellectual light, for he logically explains to us who God is and what God is like, which is the very basis of all knowledge.

He brings spiritual light for his presence banishes the darkness of sin and shame and guilt.

He brings emotional light for his presence, cheers his people.

He brings everlasting light because he gives eternal life." End quote.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Reading from Isaiah chapter 6 verse 6, chapter 9 verse 6.

For to us a child is born, that speaks of his humanity.

To us a son is given, that speaks of his deity.

And the government will be on his shoulders.

We know that that has not yet happened, but will 1 day in the future.

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

With our remaining time this morning, let's look at each of these 4 titles that explain to us what Jesus the light is like.

When I read these 2 words, wonderful counselor, I can't help but think of the wisdom of God.

As Paul wrote in First Corinthians, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Imagine the Opportunity to hear from a counselor who had all the answers to all our questions Questions he already knew we had in advance What's the meaning of life or?

I'm at a crossroad and I don't know which path to take and I feel stuck and I feel anxious and I feel unfulfilled.

Scripture says that Jesus, the wisdom of God can empathize with our weakness.

You see, during his time on earth, he knew what it felt like to be tired and weak and hungry.

You'll remember that he was betrayed by 1 of his apostles.

He even experienced unanswered prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.

And because he can relate, we can cast all of our anxiety on him.

The Apostle Peter says because he cares for us.

We can be like King Ahaz, who refused to seek the wisdom of God, who did not ask God for a sign, who did not cut the rope, or we can spend time, like this picture shows us, in the arms of a wonderful counselor.

You see, prior to David's surgery, I may not have been able to sleep, but I was able to pray.

And when I was stuck and anxious, I sought his arms of comfort.

And when I was discouraged, I went to his throne room, where I was able to cast all of my anxiety on him why because he cares for me second Jesus is mighty God or as translated from the Hebrew, al-shadai.

And there are 2 meanings to al-shadai and they fit beautifully with our theme this morning.

The first time Al Shaddai is used in scripture is when God speaks to Abraham in Genesis chapter 17.

And he says, when Abraham was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to Abraham and said to him, I am Almighty God.

Walk before me and be blameless and I will make my covenant between me and you and will multiply you exceedingly.

Almighty God was calling Abraham into relationship with him, promising that his covenant would be fulfilled by his mighty power.

Now there are 2 thoughts regarding how the Hebrew word El Shaddai is derived.

Shaddad, which means to overpower, suggests that God is stronger and more powerful and greater than all other gods, including Malik, the god of the Ammonites.

And the second thought is that Shaddai comes from Sha, meaning who, and Dai, meaning enough.

And when you combine both meanings, our mighty god is all sufficient.
